Faders privacy policy

Faders collects nothing. Audio stays in memory on your Mac and is never recorded.

Last updated

Faders is a macOS menu bar app that sets a separate volume for each application. It is made by Remiel Shirazi.

What Faders collects

Nothing. Faders does not collect, store, or transmit personal data. It has no network access, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no accounts.

The System Audio Recording permission

Faders asks macOS for the System Audio Recording permission because that is the only way macOS lets a third-party app change the volume of another app. Faders taps the app's audio stream and plays it back at the level you chose.

Audio passes through in memory and is never recorded, written to disk, analysed, or sent anywhere. Faders only taps an app while its volume is set away from 100% or it is muted; at 100% the app plays natively again. The menu bar icon shows a small dot whenever an app's audio is passing through Faders.

You can withdraw the permission at any time in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Screen & System Audio Recording. Faders then stops changing volumes and says so in its panel.

What Faders stores on your Mac

Only your settings: the volume and mute state you chose for each app, the apps you pinned or hid, your keyboard shortcuts, and the options in the Settings window. They live in the app's own sandbox container on your Mac and are removed with the app.

A diagnostic log in the same container records app names and volume changes to help with support requests. It never leaves your Mac unless you send it yourself.

Window names (optional)

When one app plays from several separate windows (several Roblox Studio places, for example), Faders can label each one with its window title. Reading titles needs the Screen Recording permission, which Faders asks for only when you click Show names. Faders reads the titles of those apps' windows while its panel is open and keeps them in memory. It never captures what is inside a window, and never stores or sends a title. Without the permission the windows are numbered instead.

Third parties

None. Faders contains no third-party code that collects data, and Apple's App Store privacy label for Faders is "Data Not Collected".

Children

Faders is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
